The Challenge: VSO International is a unique overseas development NGO, working to alleviate poverty and inequality via a network of global volunteers who train local people in education, medical and livelihood skills. Celebrating its 60thanniversary in 2018, there was an immediate challenge to raise its public profile and develop new sources of unrestricted funding.
The Result: Joining the Executive Team as interim Director of Business Development, I led a worldwide team of 100+ people and had responsibility for strategy development, the global funding pipeline, public fundraising and all marketing. My immediate focus was to stabilise a management team who had undergone numerous restructures and were without effective marketing leadership. In parallel, I was tasked with developing a coherent global Business Development strategy that more effectively aligned to the organisational strategy and clarified the iNGO’s unique value to its multiple audiences.
